Money work owes you, and things you own
The one place receipts belong, and how to keep what you own valued honestly.
Two pages sit on the asset side of your finances for very different reasons. One is money that is coming back to you. The other is value you are already holding.
Work Expenses
This page was previously called Reimbursements, and the new name is a better description: money you spent on behalf of your employer or client, which you expect to get back.
Press Log Work Expense to record one. The two figures at the top are Still Owed to Me and Settled, and each expense is either Outstanding or Received. That is the whole model, and it is deliberately simple, because the only question you ever ask of this page is how much is still out there.
One detail matters more than any other here. Work Expenses is the only place in Personal Finance that takes a receipt. Transactions do not. If you have proof of purchase that you may need to produce for someone else, this is where it goes — and this is precisely the case where you will actually be asked for it.
When the money comes back, it is a settlement, not income. Getting repaid for a taxi you paid for does not make you better off, and your income figures should not pretend otherwise.
Assets
Assets are things you own that carry real value — a vehicle, land, equipment, jewellery. Press Add an asset to record one.
Each row has a menu with Update value, Edit, Mark as sold or gone and Delete. The one to learn is Update value. An asset recorded once at what you paid for it and never touched again slowly turns your net worth into fiction, in whichever direction the market moved. The page nudges you when a valuation has gone stale, and that nudge is worth acting on.
When you part with something, use Mark as sold or gone rather than Delete. Deleting removes the asset from your history as though you never owned it. Marking it keeps the record of what you had and when it left.
Adding assets is a Personal Pro feature. Assets you have already recorded stay visible and can still be updated on the free plan. Work Expenses is not gated.
Worth remembering
- Work Expenses is the only Personal Finance page that accepts a receipt.
- Being reimbursed is a settlement, not income.
- Update valuations when nudged, and mark assets sold rather than deleting them.
