Lesson 2 of 4

Scope, targets and time frames

Get the filters right first, because every chart on every tab obeys them.

Every number in Work Analytics answers a question you set with the filters. Change the filters and the same page tells a different, equally true story. This is why two people comparing screens often disagree: they are not looking at the same question.

The panel is titled Filter Reports, with the subtitle Scope, person, time frame, and tags. It applies across all five tabs.

Scope

The scope toggle offers All, Personal and Org.

  • Personal is your own work in your own space. Use it when you are reviewing your habits and nobody else is involved.
  • Org is work belonging to the organisation you are part of.
  • All combines both. It is the honest picture of your total load, and usually the most flattering, because side projects and personal goals count too.

Targets

The target toggle switches between My targets and Company targets. This does not change the work being measured, only what it is measured against. If your own targets are ambitious and the company ones are steady, the same fortnight can look strong on one setting and average on the other. Neither is wrong.

Time frame

Choose Short-term, Mid-term or Custom Range. Short-term is good for a weekly review. Mid-term is where habits actually become visible, because a single busy week stops dominating the picture. Custom Range is for answering a specific question, such as how a particular project month went.

You can also narrow by person and by tag. Tags are the quiet workhorse here: if you tag work by client, meeting type or area, you can suddenly see how much of your month each one really consumed.

Worth remembering

  • Filters apply to every tab, so set them before you read anything.
  • My targets and Company targets change the yardstick, not the work.
  • Mid-term is where habits show; short-term mostly shows last week.
