What is a thread?

A thread is a reply attached to one message rather than added to the end of the conversation.

It keeps a side discussion beside the thing it is about, so a detailed exchange between two people does not push the main conversation off everyone else's screen.

The rule of thumb: if your reply only makes sense next to one particular message, thread it.
