Lesson 4 of 4

Reviewing, filtering and tidying your goals

Views, visibility and the housekeeping that keeps a goal list trustworthy.

Goals only work if you look at them. The page gives you three ways to do that, and they answer different questions.

Three views

List is for reading everything at once and is where the filters earn their keep. Board groups goals so you can see how much is genuinely active rather than merely open. Calendar lays goals out against their dates, which is how you spot four target dates landing in the same week.

Above the views sit the scope tabs: All Goals, My Goals, and Organization if you belong to one. Start a review in My Goals — it is the only view where everything on screen is your responsibility.

Filters worth using every week

Filter Goals narrows by workspace, owner, status and type. Status is the one to reach for first: Overdue tells you what has already slipped, and Active tells you what you are supposed to be doing right now. If Active returns a list you could not possibly work on this month, that is the finding, and the answer is to pause some of them rather than pretend.

Cancelling a goal you have honestly given up on is better housekeeping than letting it rot as overdue.

Who can see it

Every goal is Private or Workspace. Private is yours alone. Workspace means everyone in that workspace can see it, which is what you want for anything a colleague might otherwise duplicate or need to plan around. A workspace is required either way, so choose it thinking about who should be able to find the goal later.

Tidying up

Goals can be duplicated, which is the fastest way to set up next quarter from last quarter, and moved between workspaces when the work changes hands. Targets can be edited later.

The goal page itself gathers its tasks, its contributions, its plan history and its assessments, so a review means opening one page and reading down it rather than reconstructing the story from memory.

Worth remembering

  • List for reading, Board for what is active, Calendar for clashing target dates.
  • Filter by Overdue and Active weekly; pause or cancel what you are not doing.
  • Workspace visibility stops colleagues duplicating work you already own.
