What is a recurring task?

A recurring task is one definition that produces an occurrence on a schedule — every Monday, the first of each month — rather than a pile of copies you create by hand.

Because there is one definition behind many occurrences, you can change a single week without disturbing the rest, and you can stop the series without deleting the history of what was already done.
