What is a countdown timer?

A countdown runs down from an amount of time you set, instead of counting up from zero.

It is for work where the budget is the point — an hour boxed off for a review, twenty minutes on something that could otherwise absorb a morning. Counting up tells you what you spent; counting down tells you what is left.

Running out is not a wall. You can extend it if the work genuinely needs longer.
